“Swedbank is a fantastic opportunity to get a flying start to your career within IT” – Hans Bockgård, Software Engineer at Swedbank.
Swedbank has its roots in the Swedish saving bank movement with a history which reaches back to 1820. Since then a lot has happened and today Swedbank is Sweden’s biggest bank. Now, Swedbank is going through a transformation to change the future of banking. It is with this background Swedbank, together with Academy, has started a new exciting program - Java Academy for Swedbank!
What is Java Academy for Swedbank?
This initiative is a tailored program where 18 ambitious consultants will be trained in the coding language Java. The program consists of 12 intensive weeks which includes a lot of practical training and coding. After graduation, the consultants will work as Software Engineers at either the Digital Banking or the Group Lending and Payment department at Swedbank.
Life at Swedbank
The atmosphere at Swedbank is open and friendly. You will be a part of a team consisting of developers, business analysts and a team manager who all share knowledge and competence between one another. You will work a lot with both coding and problem-solving to handle different tasks and incidents. Some of these are bigger than others and in some cases hundreds or even thousands of people are affected, which makes this job both exciting and rewarding.
Hans Bockgård is currently working as a Software Engineer at Swedbank. He has a background in engineering science and he also studied Java at Academy back in 2017. He describes Academy as an intense but fun period in his life where he met a lot of people from different backgrounds. Hans describes Swedbank as a great place to work where there is a relaxed and friendly working environment.
Emile Kobbi also works as a Software Engineer in the same team as Hans. With his background in IT Service desk and his degree in Computer Science, Swedbank was a great place to start off his career. When we ask Emile what the best part of working as a Software Engineer is, his answer is when big problems appear. This is usually followed by a intense period, something that can be very thrilling. Everyone gets involved to solve the problem together, which is great.
On a day to day basis, Hans and Emile work a lot in Java Enterprise Edition and in frameworks like Spring. They both emphasize that the role consists of a lot of detective work, which is why it’s important to stay curious and keep asking questions. Another success factor to become a great Software Engineer at Swedbank, is to be fascinated by big systems and data quantities, because that is something you work a lot with!
